PG&E quietly arm twists regulators as state preps vote to raise bills

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 00:08:13 GMT

OAKLAND — During a delay ahead of a state panel’s vote to unleash higher monthly PG&E bills, the utility leviathan quietly lobbied regulators about plans that may enrich shareholders as customers endure higher rates. The state Public Utilities Commission is scheduled to make a final decision on Nov. 16 regarding PG&E’s general rate case by reviewing multiple scenarios for changes in customer monthly bills. The grim reality: The two main alternative proposals that the PUC is considering — as well as potential tweaks to these primary scenarios — all lead to big increases in monthly bills for PG&E customers. One option that the PUC is considering would increase bills for the average residential customer who receives combined electric and gas services from PG&E by $31.13 a month. Electric bills would jump by $22.37 a month while natural gas bills would increase by $8.76 a month. An alternate proposal that is being floated would increase average ...

Last season, the Hotline published weekly ‘Best of the West’ power ratings that considered not only Pac-12 teams but those in the Mountain West and Brigham Young. The exercise was so popular that we’re adding a MW-specific column to our array of offerings this season.Boise State and San Diego State make two. Will there be others? The Mountain West coaching carousel began spinning Sunday morning when Boise State announced the dismissal of  third-year coach Andy Avalos … with the Broncos smack in the middle of the conference championship race.San Diego State followed with news of its own on Monday morning, announcing that 65-year-old coach Brady Hoke would retire at the end of the season — a classy way for Hoke to end his career without the Aztecs having to execute a public termination. So two of the 12 schools have vacancies, and we believe there will be more.Nevada and New Mexico could make changes, as well. And there’s always a chance of one or more coaches leaving v...

With rosters and staff in place, new women’s pro hockey league ready to open training camps

The title of general manager doesn’t completely capture the many tasks on Danielle Marmer’s to-do list in the two months since taking over the Professional Women’s Hockey League franchise in Boston.“It’s funny you should mention that,” Marmer said with a laugh. “I just came from the carpentry shop where I was looking at what our locker stalls are going to be like, and making decisions on where we want the hooks to be, how many shelves — things I’m not an expert in.”She’s not complaining. At 29, Marmer and her fellow GMs are on the ground floor of a newly established six-team league that will feature many of the world’s top players when it begins play in January.“Like it’s pretty cool to say that I have my fingerprints on not only building the team itself, but the building of the locker room, the offices, the players’ lounge,” Marmer said.Though the teams have yet to be officially named and the schedule yet to be released, piece by piece the PWHL is coming together. Next up is Wednes...

Season-long offensive issues caught up with Jaguars in lopsided loss that raises red flags

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 00:08:13 GMT

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — It’s not totally fair to judge quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville’s offense off one game against arguably the best defense in the league. But it’s reasonable to look at Lawrence and the Jaguars after 10 weeks and have questions, probably even concerns.Nothing feels right.Lawrence has more turnovers (10) than touchdown passes (9) and is being sacked at a record rate. Calvin Ridley has been a non-factor way too often. Fellow receiver Zay Jones already has missed twice as many games this season than he did in his previous six years combined. And Jacksonville’s offensive line, a unit that’s been shuffled almost weekly, has opened few holes between the tackles and has Lawrence under more pressure than he’s faced at any level in his lifetime. The result: the Jaguars (6-3) rank 19th in total offense and 15th in scoring a few months after coach Doug Pederson said he believed his team was capable of averaging 30 points a game.Jacksonville is roughly e...
