TORONTO — It’s not unusual for Gabe Kapler to call on a pinch-hitter early in a game, particularly when the opponent is throwing a bullpen game. But Austin Slater for Michael Conforto in the second inning with a right-hander on the mound? Before Conforto recorded an at-bat Wednesday night against the Blue Jays, he was out of the game. Slater was announced as a pinch-hitter leading off the top of the second and took his spot in right field in the bottom half of the inning. The bottom of the first was rough enough, with Toronto bringing nine men to the plate and rocking Logan Webb for five runs. But it may have cost them one of their most valuable outfielders in the process.Related ArticlesSan Francisco Giants | Was Kevin Gausman the one who got away? How many local school teachers or office workers can afford one of their million-dollar “affordable” units? The builder’s remedy and greedy developers represent completely unrealistic and destructive ways of solving the housing crisis. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A blind San Francisco homeless man who was accused of kicking a woman in the leg for refusing to give him $1 was found not guilty by a jury this week. Jurors acquitted Charles Underwood, 50, of misdemeanor assault and battery charges. While awaiting trial for the assault charge earlier this year, Underwood was subjected to a stay-away order from a seven-block area where he had been living on the streets. In May, he was arrested for returning to the area for panhandling. After his May arrest, Underwood took the extraordinary step of requesting to remain in jail in hopes that the court would send his case to trial faster amid a growing backlog of cases in San Francisco Superior Court. "No one should feel like they have to stay in jail just to get a trial," said Deputy Public Defender Sarah Hashemi. "We are grateful to the jury for their verdict and relieved that Mr. Underwood is finally free of these constraints that had banned him from an area that has become ...Former safe haven for homeless during pandemic, Oasis Inn to become shelter

After months of community advocacy, it will now permanently serve as a safe place for San Francisco women and families experiencing homelessness. On Tuesday, the Tenderloin-based service center St. Anthony Foundation announced its plans to step in and purchase Oasis Inn so families residing in its 59 hotel rooms would not have to move out. St. Anthony's considers the acquisition of 900 Franklin St. to be a major expansion in its commitment to providing stability for San Franciscans in need.
