By ERIC TUCKER (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI offered Friday to show top lawmakers next week a bureau document that purports to relate to President Joe Biden and his family following weeks of demands by congressional Republicans and a contempt threat against Director Christopher Wray.In a statement, the FBI said it would produce the document in a secure location inside the U.S. Capitol for the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer, and the panel’s top Democrat, Jamie Raskin of Maryland. At issue is an internal FBI document known as an FD-1023, which agents use to record unverified tips and information they receive from confidential human sources. The FBI says such documents can contain uncorroborated and incomplete information, and that documenting the tip does not validate it.“By offering to provide access to the requested document in combination with a briefing to offer context, the FBI has agreed in good faith to giv...Republicans schedule 1st presidential debate for Aug. 23, but there’s no guarantee Trump will attend

By SARA BURNETT (Associated Press)CHICAGO (AP) — The first 2024 Republican presidential debate will be held Aug. 23, the Republican National Committee announced Friday, with a second debate the following night should it be needed. The RNC also detailed the criteria that will be used for candidates to qualify for the debate stage, including a pledge to support the eventual Republican presidential nominee. That requirement could keep some candidates off the stage, including former President Donald Trump, who hasn’t committed to supporting the nominee if he doesn’t emerge from the primary. Trump also has questioned why he would participate since he holds a commanding lead in GOP primary polls. The debate will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which also will be the site of the party’s nominating convention next year. It’s a nod to the importance of the battleground state, which is likely to be key to a presidential victory again in 2024. “The RNC is c...Allstate quietly stopped accepting new insurance applications from California homeowners

SAN FRANCISCO — A California appeals court has overturned murder convictions against two Bay Area men, six years after they were sentenced to life in prison for killing a 23-year-old man in what the lead detective called a dispute over an Antioch “money block,” court records show.In a unanimous 3-0 decision, the First District Appellate Court overturned murder convictions for William Pree, 41, and Edward Robinson, 45, in the 2015 shooting death of Kartiae Ely. The court justices ruled that both murder convictions are now invalid in light of SB 1437, a 2019 state law that drastically scaled back California’s felony murder rule, which allowed a person to be convicted of murder for committing a less serious felony that resulted in a homicide.Pree had been convicted of second-degree murder, while Robinson was convicted of first-degree, premeditated murder and gun possession. The justices ruled that instructions given by the trial judge — Diana Becton, who ha...VW to launch electric version of venerable Bus in 2024
